In traditional philanthropic giving, the people who control the wealth almost always control the distribution of that wealth. In order to empower the community, the Fund for Santa Barbara uses a unique grant making process that truly sets us apart from other foundations. For example, in our model the Board of Directors is responsible for securing the funding through their own gifts and different fundraising efforts but it is the Grant Making Committee who determines where those funds should be spent.
The GMC is made up of community activists, each with a different perspective and background on the community. Between two different funding cycles, the Grant Making Committee reads up to 80 applications each year.
