Youth Making Change

What is Youth Making Change?
Youth Making Change (YMC) is an exciting opportunity for Santa Barbara County youth. YMC empowers youth to be active leaders in their community promoting service and giving; and strengthening youth participation in philanthropy. YMC gives money and assistance to projects that address community issues and challenges directly affecting youth in Santa Barbara County. The YMC board (made up of youth) makes the decision about which groups get money for their ideas! The 2008-2009 YMC board will give a total of $5,000 to fund local projects important to youth.

Youth Making Change is a program of the Fund for Santa Barbara inspired by the Santa Barbara Foundation's Katherine Harvey Fellows (KHF) Class of 2006-2007. KHF was established to identify, select and educate talented and motivated future community leaders about philanthropy.

What do YMC members do?
Learn about philanthropy and current issues facing young people in Santa Barbara County. Review proposed project ideas and make decisions as a group about which ideas to give money to. Give out $5,000 to projects that impact youth. Reach out to youth in the community to encourage them to plan a project and apply for money to carry it out. Develop important job skills and leadership experience. Understand, explain and address inequality facing youth through philanthropy. Learn new skills like: meeting planning and facilitation, outreach and public speaking, action planning, proposal evaluation and group decision making. Follow up with and give support to YMC funded groups. Board members receive a $300 stipend for their participation.
